FAQs
So, what’s this about?
The Pain Science Social Hour was born to fill a huge gap in education and healthcare, specifically in the treatment of chronic and persistent pain. It’s where professionals who work with this complex condition can meet, mingle, and learn from each other by sharing wider evidenced perspectives. Caregivers, friends and family are welcome! This is a casual get-together where the most up-to-date facts can be evaluated alongside helpful anecdotes through an exchange of information and experiences. *Please note: This is not a support group nor a medical advice group. For many reasons, this would not be the appropriate environment or situation for anyone seeking either of those services. Please read the disclaimer at the end.
Why a Social Hour?
We want this to be as relaxed as possible for everyone. Let’s face it. Being in this line of work can be isolating, so it’s important and professionally healthy to hang out with like-minded peers. And we shouldn’t have to wait for the next big conference in a faraway city to talk shop. This is not a doctor or therapist’s office, nor is it a clinic, hospital, or workplace. This is where everyone gets to be real-life, down-to-earth humans while having productive and insightful conversations. In the process we may piece together some pain puzzles, gain more clarity, and just mayyybe have some fun. Please note: this is a kid-friendly AND dog-friendly establishment, so you can bring your little buddies along!
What if I don’t drink alcohol?

Great! Our Social Hour isn’t about that. As a matter of fact, the venue was chosen, specifically, because it offers a big selection of coffees and other non-alcohol drink options along with good, cheap à la carte food. You are free to partake or just enjoy the company. This is a judgement-free zone. We do, however, expect participants to be responsible and not treat this like a frat house or place to drown sorrows (we are not equipped to handle either of those scenarios). If you are on the journey of recovery, please be mindful of your process. If you are not comfortable around others who may be having a cocktail or feel you might be triggered, this may not be the right event for you at this time.
Is this a networking thing or a support group thing?
Neither. It’s a social learning and growing thing. As a matter of fact, aggressive solicitation of products or services is frowned upon and considered to be very poor taste. If someone is trying to “sell” anything, they are not welcome. Tell one of the organizers (like me) and we’ll set them straight, and don’t let us catch you! ONE STRIKE and you’re out! There’ll be none of that used-car salesman “here’s my card” business! The last thing off-the-clock professionals need is some wack-a-doodle trying to sell yet another bogus gimmick. If someone expressly asks for your business information because there was an authentic and meaningful connection (and vice-versa), that’s perfectly lovely and welcome. Meaningful connections are what we’re about.
What is The LOADED Question?
For each monthly event, we prepare a unique LOADED Question. This topic is to serve as a productive focal point for conversation. Of course, we are free to meander and segue because this is a chill gathering, after all . You can get a glimpse of past and upcoming LOADED Questions here.
Do I need to be a professional to attend?
Nope! All you need to be is curious and genuine. You may simply want to learn how to better relate to a friend or loved one dealing with pain in isolation. Compassion is perhaps the most helpful thing we can offer patients navigating through physical and/or emotional pain, and we hope to create a space where everyone recognizes there is now better information that can lead to solutions. Your understanding of this complex condition is much more powerful than you may realize. All are welcome to join in helping heal this epidemic of chronic pain.
*Disclaimer: This social event is for educational and conversational purposes ONLY. Conversations are NOT intended to replace consultation with a medical doctor, nor is any discussion to be construed as medical advice. If you have any questions regarding your physical health, mental health, or a medical condition, it is recommended you promptly consult your physician or other appropriate healthcare provider.*

See you there!
